A lot of people, including myself, have that question that beckons in the back of our self-conscious every time we get on the mat to train: When am I going to get better? Well the answer to that is simple – have patience. Now, just to be clear, I’m no expert in the field of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. As a matter of fact, I’ve only been training for a couple months, but I’ve talked to many other Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners from beginners to intermediates to masters, and I’ve gleaned the same advice and lessons: Patience and persistence is the only way to progress in this sport.
It goes something like this: You should up for training one day and you feel like a million bucks – the techniques the professor is teaching are just sinking in, you’re rolling and getting the most dominant positions and constantly sweeping your opponent. Other nights, it’s the polar opposite. It seems as if absolutely nothing the professor has shown you is sinking in and you’re constantly getting rolled, swept, and submitted. Fear not, these are natural processes in the realm of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At least, that’s what the more advanced students are telling me. Even as I’m writing this article, I still can’t help but kick that feeling in the back of my mind; I still can’t heed my own advice. At this point, faith in yourself and your trainers become imperative to progression in this sport.
Some helpful advice that I keep in my pocket to sustain myself through particularly difficult training sessions is this: You’re getting better whether or not you realize it. One day, small things will begin to “click” and lessons will begin to make more sense. You will begin to realize the reasons why you’re doing what you’re doing and lessons will become more informant. Before you know it, you will be learning more about yourself and the way your body works, the reasons why techniques work, and the proper positioning and movements to get your opponent to where you want to go.
