It is at home that we teach manners.
We live in a society where most often, both mom and dad need to work. We live in society where consumption is king, so it’s always a new iphone, new tv, etc. and parents must work to afford the expenses of living in this modern age. Unfortunately, kids are often left behind in the care of grandparents or day-cares.
At Sampa Martial arts, we see this a lot and have provided an after school program to help our parents. We love all of our kids, but it is more and more common to see kids with an entitled and impatient mentality.
This is probably because of social media and technology. Sometimes, as parents, we want to give our children what we did not have, but always giving them what they want isn’t always the best thing to do either.
When I was in Europe, I stumbled across an ad by a school program that said, “Parents: it’s at home that we teach the kids to say good morning, good afternoon, thank you, and I’m sorry. It is at home that we teach them to respect their elders and teachers. It is at home that we teach them not to lie, to not use foul language, and to not take advantage of others.”
It’s at home that we do all this. But lately it has become more difficult to do this at home because parents are so busy working.
Martial arts After school programs like the one offered at Sampa Jiu Jitsu try to teach our kids good manners, work ethic, and respect, but our job is really just to reinforce these lessons, not to teach them for the first time.
The real lessons are taught at home. Though we want to help our kids learn martial arts, self defense, hard work, and manners, we cannot do it alone!
We live in a crazy world with so many demands, but we shouldn’t forget why we work so hard: So we can leave a better world for our children to live in. A part of that better world means that you have to teach them good manners and values, so that once they come to a program like Sampa Jiu Jitsu, we can emphasize and reinforce the lessons you have taught to them.
This is our Culture here at sampa Jiu Jitsu in Glendora and Diamond Bar!
