Krav Maga Classes in Glendora
Krav Maga is a self-defense system taught to all the soldiers in Israel while they are serving their mandatory three-year enlistment.
Krav Maga is a system that teaches the student how to fight, shoot, defend themselves against knives and other weapons like clubs, baseball bats, etc. Krav Maga started as a way for Jewish people to protect themselves against the Nazis in Germany. During my visit in Israel, I attended an amazing, intensive Krav Maga course taught by the Israeli Defense Force trainers, Itay Danenberg and Ran Nakash.
To start, there are a few differences between Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
First and foremost, Krav Maga is a very simple system, designed for efficiency and self-defense, but not for competition or tournaments. In Krav Maga, biting, eye gouging, and groin kicking are all acceptable, which greatly differs from tournament Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
I think that both defense systems work well together though because they both teach the combative mentality.
There will be self defense situations where it is best to go straight to eye gouging, biting, or groin kicking, and other situations where those are not the best options. Sometimes the surprise attack to the eye or groin are good to start, but you will then need other fighting skills.
Krav Maga has a foundation in boxing, but knowledge in any other combative sport like judo, wrestling, or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is beneficial too.
Because Krav Maga aims to be very efficient, it is also a surprisingly simple system and can be learned within a couple of months. However, the most important part of learning Krav Maga is the continued training and sparring. To learn more about the sparring aspect of Krav Maga, please read my next article.
Overall, Krav Maga is a very interesting and beneficial self-defense art to learn in order to supplement your Brazillian Jiu Jistu.
We are starting our Krav Maga program very soon in early fall 2017 in Glendora. We are also incorporating some of the Krav Maga basics in our BJJ training for our kids in order to give them stronger self-defense foundations.
