Krav Maga: Sparring is a Must – after a certain level
During my trip to Israel, I enrolled in a very tough training camp for Krav Maga, taught by the Israeli Defense Force trainers. It was a very demanding week, with training from 9 am to 5 pm every day. Not only did the trainers expect us to know the technique from each level, but we also had to do lots of sparring since the trainers refuse to certify instructors who do not have a strong sparring foundation.
Krav Maga is a very nice combative system, but not a sport, so it allows eye gouging, hits to the groin, and biting. Sparring is a must in Krav Maga because you must learn how to train your reactions when you are hit in places like the groin or the eye. The trick to sparring with Krav Maga is to find a healthy balance between conditioning for attacked to sensitive areas and preserving your partners so you can continue sparring. It is important to know how to handle a hit to the face or the groin and to have the mental toughness to push through and know what to do next to defense yourself.
Krav Maga has very simple techniques, but physical fitness and mental toughness is extremely important. Krav Maga incorporates a lot of wrestling, boxing, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. By incorporating combative sports with surprise attacks, Krav Maga helps to prepare you for survival during no-rules, self-defense situations in life.
We are starting our Krav Maga program very soon in early fall 2017 in Glendora. We are also incorporating some of the Krav Maga basics in our BJJ training for our bjj kids and teens program in order to give them stronger self-defense foundations.
