At Sampa Jiu Jitsu Martial Arts, we strongly believe that martial arts are about much more than medals, rankings, or social media pictures. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Wrestling, Kickboxing, and self-defense training are tools that help regular people become more disciplined, healthier, more confident, and mentally stronger. This weekend was another perfect example of that philosophy in action.
It was an exciting and inspiring weekend for the students and coaches of Sampa Jiu-Jitsu Martial Arts as we had athletes competing at multiple high-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments while continuing to grow our local martial arts community in Glendora and Fontana, California.

Coach Ruben and Coach Ari Compete at the IBJJF World Championship
One of the highlights of the weekend was seeing Coach Ruben and Coach Ari represent Sampa Jiu-Jitsu Martial Arts at the prestigious IBJJF World Championship in Long Beach, California. The IBJJF Worlds is considered one of the most important Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in the world and attracts elite competitors from all over the globe.
At Sampa Jiu Jitsu Martial Arts, we believe instructors should continue learning, evolving, and challenging themselves. Watching our coaches compete at the highest level helps inspire our students and demonstrates that growth never stops in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Competing at the World Championship level requires years of discipline, sacrifice, conditioning, technical development, and mental preparation. We are extremely proud of Coach Ruben and Ari for stepping onto one of the biggest stages in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and representing our academy, our students, and our community.
Sampa Jiu Jitsu Martial Arts 5 A.M. Students Compete at NA BJJF Orange County
While Coach Ruben was competing at the Worlds, many of our dedicated 5 a.m. students competed at the NA BJJF Orange County tournament and delivered outstanding performances. Several students brought home medals, showing that hard work, consistency, and discipline truly pay off.
What makes these results especially meaningful is the fact that most of these competitors are not professional athletes. They are everyday people with careers, families, responsibilities, and busy schedules. Some are business owners, office workers, healthcare professionals, parents, or students who wake up before sunrise to train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and then head to work.
This is one of the reasons why Sampa Jiu-Jitsu Martial Arts takes pride in our morning training programs. The 5 a.m. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are filled with individuals who are committed to personal development and self-improvement. They train not because they need to compete professionally, but because they understand the value that martial arts bring into their lives.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches patience, resilience, stress management, humility, problem-solving, and discipline. Preparing for competition adds another layer of challenge. It forces people to manage fear, nerves, expectations, and physical exhaustion while still balancing work and family life.
We congratulate every student who dared to step onto the competition mats at NA BJJF Orange County. Whether they won gold, silver, or bronze medals or simply gained valuable experience, every competitor grew stronger through the process.
Why Hobbyists Competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Matters
At Sampa Jiu-Jitsu Martial Arts, we believe hobbyist competitors deserve tremendous respect. Many people think competition is only for elite athletes or future champions, but the truth is that competition can be an incredible tool for personal growth.
For many adults, stepping into a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament is one of the most uncomfortable things they voluntarily choose to do. It requires months of preparation, commitment to training, better eating habits, improved conditioning, and the willingness to fail publicly while learning valuable lessons.
This process develops confidence that extends far beyond the mats. Many students discover that once they can handle the pressure of competition, other areas of life become easier to manage. Public speaking, work presentations, difficult conversations, and stressful situations become less intimidating.
Martial arts training, especially Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, helps people become mentally tougher and emotionally more resilient. That is one of the biggest reasons why Sampa Jiu-Jitsu Martial Arts continues to encourage students of all ages and experience levels to challenge themselves in healthy and productive ways.
Saturday 7:30 A.M. Class Continues to Grow
Another exciting development at Sampa Jiu Jitsu Martial Arts is the continued growth of our Saturday 7:30 a.m. class. The atmosphere in this class has been incredible, with students consistently showing up ready to learn, train hard, and support each other.
The culture of a martial arts academy matters tremendously. Technical instruction is important, but the environment inside the academy is equally important. We are proud to continue building a positive, respectful, disciplined, and welcoming atmosphere for beginners and advanced students alike.
Our students come from many different backgrounds, age groups, professions, and experience levels, yet they all share a common goal: improving themselves physically and mentally through martial arts training.
The Official “Best Smelling Student” Award Goes to Greg
In one of the funniest moments of the weekend, our student Greg received the official “Best Smelling Student” award at Sampa Jiu-Jitsu Martial Arts. And yes, this was a real award.
Although it was done with humor, cleanliness and hygiene are actually extremely important in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts training. Since training involves close physical contact, maintaining proper hygiene helps keep everyone safe and healthy.
At Sampa Jiu Jitsu Martial Arts, we emphasize professionalism, respect for training partners, clean uniforms, clean mats, and good hygiene habits as part of martial arts culture. So congratulations again to Greg for setting the standard.
